With top-10 finishes in each of this season’s first three races, Martin Truex Jr. is off to one of the best starts of his Sprint Cup career.

He continued his upward climb Sunday, finishing second in the Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, his fifth career runner-up finish on a 1.5-mile racetrack.

“I really can’t put it into words,” Truex told Fox Sports. “I’m just proud of everyone. I’m obviously proud of (girlfriend) Sherry (Pollex) and what she’s been through (ovarian cancer) and everything I’ve learned from her to be a better person.”

Truex finished eighth in the season-opening Daytona 500 and sixth last week at Atlanta. With his Las Vegas showing, Truex is now fourth in the Sprint Cup standings, 16 points behind leader and Sunday’s race winner, Kevin Harvick.

“It was just a solid weekend,” Truex said. “The guys are making good decisions, and we’re not having any terrible luck. We just have to keep doing what we’re doing and find a little bit more speed and we’ll be able to challenge guys.”

Truex led three laps in Sunday’s 267-lap event, but acknowledged that his Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet just couldn’t keep up with the Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy of Harvick.

“Harvick was just so fast all day,” Truex said. “I got the lead on him once there on the restart and thought, ‘This is pretty cool,’ but I didn’t have anything to hold him off.

“We’ll keep working, we’ll get better and hopefully this is a sign of things to come.”
