Celtics owner: I believe Celtics, not Thunder, were runner-up to Warriors for Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant chose the Warriors over the Thunder.

Or did he choose the Warriors over the Celtics?

Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, via CSN New England:

I know we were close. I’ve got to say -- this is just for me. This is not me trying to convince anybody else of anything or that. But just as I walk around by myself thinking, I think we were in the final two teams. I’m not even sure he was going back to OKC. Maybe so.

Durant certainly seemed intrigued by the Celtics, reportedly giving them a road map to becoming even more desirable. Boston luring Al Horford couldn’t have hurt.

But I dunno. Though he has insight into Durant’s process, Grousbeck obviously isn’t an objective source. He has incentive to boost perception of the Celtics -- to sell fans and future free agents.

Maybe Durant will someday reveal more about his thinking during free agency. Right now, as much as he says he’s OK with the backlash, it’d be too hurtful to tell Oklahoma City that the Thunder didn’t even come in second.

That creates space for Grousbeck to share a narrative, true or not, that fits his agenda.
