Gregg Popovich on Trump: “There is no accountability”

Gregg Popovich was not afraid to speak his mind after the Electoral College went in favor of Donald Trump on Nov. 8. Last week the San Antonio Spurs head coach had strong words about Trump’s election, and the future of the country.

During an interview with The Undefeated, Popovich again spoke of some of the issues facing the United States and with Trump’s direction.

In particular, Popovich said that he was worried about Trump’s divisive campaign and lack of an effort thus far to bridge that gap as president-elect:

I thought that would be a great way to start if he was really interested in unifying and bringing everybody into the tent, so to speak. But that just got totally blown away, and everything he said there is no responsibility or accountability for it. So that still bothers me very much.

Popovich also spoke of Trump’s appointment of Steve Bannon, a man described by many as a white nationalist, calling it troublesome and Trump himself opportunistic, “You can’t believe anything that comes out of his mouth.”

The future Hall of Fame coach also said that the Holts -- owners of the Spurs and who gave large donations to Trump -- have not kept him from speaking and took exception to any implication that his employers allowed him the freedom to speak openly:

No, they haven’t given me that freedom. I live in America. That’s what has given me that freedom. There are no individual people that give me that freedom.
