Report: Pistons Austin Daye reaches deal to play in Russia

As staff from the players union and NBA league offices meet hoping to lay down a few stones on the road to a labor deal Wednesday, more and more players are getting serious about overseas options.

That includes the Pistons’ Austin Daye, who has signed a deal to play in Russia, according to a report from Sportando.

As reported on Twitter by Vincent Goodwill, Austin Daye reached an agreement with a Russian team for the upcoming season. The forward will have an NBA out to exercise until December. Daye has played two years in the NBA with Detroit Pistons averaging 6.3ppg and 3.2rpg in 141 games.

That’s an interesting twist, an opt-out that he can use until December… we assume that means the end of December. The two sides would need to reach a deal by early December to have any chance to salvage even a partial season (they could reach one more quickly).

The Pistons have a rebuilding process to start (one held up by this lockout) and Daye could well be part of that future. He is under contract for three more years with the Pistons if the team picks up his options. He should be in shape and ready to go whenever the season starts. As long as they get it going by December.
