Johnson will look to earn his way back up to the NBA by using the D-League.

Johnson had played in 11 games with the Hornets this year before getting released on Friday.

Johnson injured his quadriceps back in September and is still trying to recover. He’s an unrestricted free agent stateside, but it’s unlikely he’ll get a guaranteed deal.

Robert Hite, a 6-2 combo guard from the University of Miami, will be joined by Jiri Hubalek and Trey Johnson in Tucson. Hubalek is a forward/center from Iowa State who averaged six points and two rebounds in four games with the Suns in Summer League, while Johnson is a shooting guard from Jackson State who played five preseason games for New Orleans last season.

Johnson, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, ranked 10th nationally with an average of 23.5 points in leading the Tigers to a 15-17 record. He does not plan to hire an agent, preserving his eligibility. Underclassmen have until June 18 to withdraw from the draft.

Both players are not expected to make the team. Johnson is a guard who was released by New Orleans back in 2012.

Johnson was averaging 20.1 ppg for the Bakersfield Jam of the D-League, but will not see enough playing time to make a fantasy impact in Cleveland.

Gaines, Aaron Miles, Curtis Jerrells, and Trey Johnson were among the hopefuls, and the winner could get pressed into some action with Sebastian Telfair the only real PG on the roster. Regardless, none of them are capable of having fantasy value so stay away.

Johnson was leading the D-League in scoring with 25.8 points per game, but is unlikely to get enough playing time to make a fantasy impact in Toronto.
