Hite

Hite had slipped below our radar since failing to make the Suns squad as a free agent in 2008.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Hite played well for the Nets in summer league. He appeared in 12 games for the Heat last season, averaging 4.3 points and 1.3 rebounds. “We are pleased to add Robert to our roster,” Nets president Rod Thorn said. “He performed capably for us in the recent summer league, and we feel he can potentially add depth to our backcourt.”

The 6-2 Hite played 12 games for Miami last season and played well for the Nets’ summer league team.

Robert Hite, a 6-2 combo guard from the University of Miami, will be joined by Jiri Hubalek and Trey Johnson in Tucson. Hubalek is a forward/center from Iowa State who averaged six points and two rebounds in four games with the Suns in Summer League, while Johnson is a shooting guard from Jackson State who played five preseason games for New Orleans last season.

Hite’s addition was a bit of a surprise and Vincent Grier was the casualty here, getting cut because the Heat needed shooting and ball handling skills. Grier, however, needs work on his offensive game, coach Pat Riley said.

This is the time of the preseason when most veterans are rested and the young guys get one last chance to make the team before cuts are made. Hite was explosive tonight, hitting 10-of-14 shots, but he’s a long shot to make the team.

“Robert and I have mutually agreed that he take some time away from the team to try and get his personal issues in order,” team President Pat Riley said in a statement.

His success can be tied directly to the absence of Antoine Walker and James Posey (suspended), as well as Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal. He doesn’t appear to have much fantasy value.

He’s expected to sign with the Heat and could very well be in action Thursday against the Cavs. The addition of Jones will likely mean Dorell Wright’s role will be reduced. Miami has reportedly offered Wright in trade packages, including an offer for Corey Maggette. Miami is expected to waive Robert Hite to make room for Jones.

Hite was recently charged with a DUI and had not been with the team since.
