Jeremy Kapinos and Durant Brooks are neck-and-neck right now in their competition to be the Packers’ punter, according to special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum.
The Packers have struggled to find a consistent punter since Josh Bidwell left after the 2003 season. Kapinos was the team’s punter for the final four games of last season, while Brooks was drafted by the Redskins in 2008 and had the job for six games before injuring his hip. Whoever punts better in camp will have the job.
  • Packers waived P Durant Brooks.
Jeremy Kapinos will be Green Bay’s starter in Week 1. Brooks, a failed sixth-round pick by the Redskins in 2008, was in camp on a futures deal.
  • Redskins beat reporter Jason La Canfora writes that coach Jim Zorn “tore (P Durant Brooks) up on the sidelines like nothing I’ve seen around here for a long time” during the team’s Week 3 win.
“The tongue-lashing seemed to go on forever,” La Canfora adds. Brooks, a sixth-round pick, got the job in camp despite being outplayed by Derrick Frost. Brooks currently ranks 31st in the NFL in net average. Frost is 7th.
  • Redskins agreed to terms with sixth-round P Durant Brooks.
Brooks won the Ray Guy Award as a senior at Georgia Tech, averaging a stellar 40.6 net yards per punt. It would be quite an upset if he doesn’t start over Derrick Frost this year.
  • Redskins waived P Derrick Frost and OT Todd Wade, according to NFL Network’s Adam Schefter.
Wade was Washington’s most experienced backup tackle and also plays guard, but he’s too injury prone. Durant Brooks is locked in as the team’s punter.
  • According to Redskins beat reporter Jason La Canfora, P Durant Brooks was getting “ripped by his teammates on the sidelines” after a couple of errant punts.
La Confora adds, “The Redskins have to make a change. Otherwise, something like this will affect morale after a while... Right now, with a slim margin of victory or defeat most weeks, the team needs a guy who can punt 42 yards with some height and consistency.” Brooks ranks dead last in average length among active punters.
  • The Redskins announced that Durant Brooks will not be their punter in Week 7.
Someone else will be kicking against Cleveland. Bigger names on the market include Ben Graham, Josh Miller, Todd Sauerbrun, and Ryan Plackemeier.
  • Redskins released P Durant Brooks with an injury settlement.
Brooks’ hip flexor wasn’t a season-ender, but his play in the Skins’ first five games is career threatening. Ryan Plackemeier has taken over in D.C.
  • Redskins signed P Ryan Plackemeier.
He replaces sixth-round rookie Durant Brooks, whose punting average ranked dead last in the league.
