Jeremy Kapinos and Durant Brooks are neck-and-neck right now in their competition to be the Packers’ punter, according to special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum.

The Packers have struggled to find a consistent punter since Josh Bidwell left after the 2003 season. Kapinos was the team’s punter for the final four games of last season, while Brooks was drafted by the Redskins in 2008 and had the job for six games before injuring his hip. Whoever punts better in camp will have the job.

Redskins beat reporter Jason La Canfora writes that coach Jim Zorn “tore (P Durant Brooks) up on the sidelines like nothing I’ve seen around here for a long time” during the team’s Week 3 win.

“The tongue-lashing seemed to go on forever,” La Canfora adds. Brooks, a sixth-round pick, got the job in camp despite being outplayed by Derrick Frost. Brooks currently ranks 31st in the NFL in net average. Frost is 7th.

According to Redskins beat reporter Jason La Canfora, P Durant Brooks was getting “ripped by his teammates on the sidelines” after a couple of errant punts.

La Confora adds, “The Redskins have to make a change. Otherwise, something like this will affect morale after a while... Right now, with a slim margin of victory or defeat most weeks, the team needs a guy who can punt 42 yards with some height and consistency.” Brooks ranks dead last in average length among active punters.
