Raiders waived TE/DT Fred Wakefield and promoted DE Greyson Gunheim from the practice squad.

Gunheim is a rookie from Washington, where he never had more than 6.5 sacks in a season. Wakefield was a jack of many trades, the master of none.

Raiders signed DL Greyson Gunheim off their practice squad.

Gunheim surprisingly didn’t make the 53-man roster out of training camp despite being an Al Davis favorite. No team signed him off Oakland’s practice squad, however, which indicates that Gunheim isn’t really much of a player.

There is reportedly “talk” that the Raiders will change to a 3-4 defense to get second-year DE Greyson Gunheim on the field more.

This wouldn’t be a good idea. Oakland’s linebackers are sideline-to-sideline guys whose speed would be offset in the 3-4. Even worse, the Raiders have nothing close to a two-gap nose tackle. Don’t look for the idea to happen. Teams don’t change entire defenses for undrafted free agents like Gunheim.

Raiders released LB Slade Norris, DL Chris Cooper, DE Grayson Gunheim, OG Brandon Rodd, OG Alex Parson, and LB David Nixon.

A fourth-round pick out of Oregon State last season, Norris struggled to make the transition from college defensive end. Cooper was originally drafted by the Raiders way back in 2001. He was out of the league for all of 2007-08.
