Lions GM Brad Holmes said that if Hendon Hooker wants to be the No. 2 quarterback, “then win the No. 2 quarterback job.”
It’s not exactly a glowing endorsement of the behind-the-scenes development from Hooker. The 2023 third-round pick appeared in three games in which the Lions scored 49 or more points last season, completing 6-of-9 passes for 62 yards. It sounds like Kyle Allen (and potentially Jake Fromm) will push him for No. 2 duties this offseason.
  • DET Quarterback #4
Lions signed QB Kyle Allen, formerly of the Steelers.
Allen joins two other backups in Detroit. Hendon Hooker, who is under contract through 2026, was Detroit’s backup last year. Jake Fromm, who is under contract through 2025, is currently third string. The Lions can notably save all $1.03 million of Fromm’s salary with a pre-June 1 release. Allen is a more proven veteran than Fromm. Ultimately the Lions may just carry four quarterbacks in camp and see what happens.
  • FA Quarterback #18
    Lions waived QB Jake Fromm.
The Lions waived Fromm and fellow QB Nate Sudfeld, keeping their quarterback room to just Jared Goff and Hendon Hooker. Lions also waived/released CB Essang Bassey, WR Daurice Fountain, CB Javelin Guidry, LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe, OT Jamarco Jones, WR Tom Kennedy, TE Sean McKeon, S C.J. Moore, DL Pat O’Connor, DL Kyle Peko, WR Donovan Peoples-Jones, LB Ty Summers, LB Mitchell Agude, WR Maurice Alexander, LB Abraham Beauplan, DL Mathieu Betts, OG Jake Burton, WR Jalon Calhoun, OL Duke Clemens, LS Scott Daly, WR Kaden Davis, C Kingsley Eguakun, RB Jake Funk, S Chelen Garnes, CB Steven Gilmore, C Bryan Hudson, RB Jermar Jefferson, RB Zonovan Knight, TE James Mitchell, DL Chris Smith, DL Isaac Ukwu, CB Rachad Wildgoose, and TE Shane Zylstra and DL David Bada.
  • FA Quarterback #12
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports free agent QB Jake Fromm worked out for the Packers.
Fromm is a career backup who was let go by the Commanders at the end of the 2023 preseason. He’s attempted 60 passes in his career while throwing for 210-1-3 and completing 45 percent of those attempts. In the event he signs with the Packers, it’s likely as little more than a camp body. He would have a chance to compete with Michael Pratt for the QB3 spot on the depth chart, but wouldn’t be expected to make the roster.
  • FA Quarterback #12
    Commanders released QB Jake Fromm.
It was a quick stay in Washington for Fromm, who hasn’t seen regular season action since 2021 with the Giants. The late-round 2020 draft pick will likely continue bouncing around as a QB3 option in the NFL.
  • FA Quarterback #12
    Commanders released QB Jake Fromm.
Fromm was pushing to win the third quarterback job after a strong preseason. The former Georgia Bulldog threw for 262 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while completing 68.3 percent of his passes, but the Commanders will roll into Week 1 with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett as their two quarterbacks. It’s possible Fromm will end up back on the practice squad after a strong preseason. The Commanders also cut RB Derrick Gore and CB Tariq Castro-Fields.
  • FA Quarterback
Free agent QB Jake Fromm is working out for the Giants.
Fromm in a 2021 spot start for New York was unimaginably bad, setting back football a half century with 103 yards, one touchdown, and two picks in a 22-7 loss to Washington. The Giants are doing their due diligence with Daniel Jones (ankle) and Tyrod Taylor (concussion) in question for Week 5. Fromm under center this week would be catastrophic for every fantasy-relevant Giants player (aka Saquon Barkley and no one else).

  • FA Quarterback
Giants did not tender QB Jake Fromm, making him a free agent.
Fromm was an exclusive rights free agent, so the Giants only needed to offer him a minimum contract to keep him in the fold. That is a stark and, frankly, correct indictment of his level of play in 2021. Fromm will likely latch onto an offseason roster somewhere, but his NFL career is not headed in the right direction.

  • FA Quarterback
Jake Fromm completed 15-of-31 passes for 103 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the Giants’ 22-7, Week 18 loss to Washington, also losing a fumble.
No offense to the kid, but this shouldn’t be happening on an NFL football field. The only reason Fromm found the end zone — the first and quite likely only score of his career — was because the Football Team seemed to literally forget about Darius Slayton in the red zone. A 2020 fifth-round pick of the Bills, Fromm ends his relief of Mike Glennon the owner of a 3.5 YPA and 1:3 TD:INT total on 60 passes. Giants fans and random television viewers deserve better. Never a displayer of NFL traits in the SEC, Fromm should not be in the mix for anyone’s No. 2 job in 2022.

  • Quarterback
Speaking Wednesday on Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm, Joe Judge said to “expect both guys to play” in Week 17 against the Bears.
Judge elaborated that he plans to toggle his quarterbacks based on situation and what each player can do in certain packages. That sounds great on Wednesday, but given that the two players in question are Glnnon and Fromm, this plan is likely to devolve into a haphazard tilt spiral on gameday. The Giants passing game is radioactive for fantasy purposes. Even Saquon Barkley is unlikely to deliver a ton of value unless he can deliver enough big plays to overcome his atrocious circumstances.
