Feagles is at 1,364 -- three behind Sean Landeta. The veteran has never missed a game in his 17 seasons; playing in 272 straight. That’s the second-longest streak in NFL history, behind Browns and Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall who played in 282 straight.

He didn’t miss a punt.

Despite Ward’s impressive play early in ’07, his exit would be more palatable after Ahmad Bradshaw’s playoff heroics. Wilson played well after moving to free safety, and Mitchell has been very solid when healthy.

With Lawrence Tynes re-upping and LSs Jay Alford and Zak DeOssie going into their second years, the Giants’ specialists will stay intact. Feagles was 30th in net punting last year, but did well pinning opponents inside the 20.

A former Aussie Rules player, Bond is likely nothing more than a camp leg. Even with the Giants and veteran Jeff Feagles at a contract impasse, both sides expect him to return for the 2010 season.

The fact that Feagles is aiming higher than whatever the Giants are offering strongly indicates that he aims to keep playing. He turned 44 this month.

Feagles, who recently turned 44, was locked in a contract standoff with the team last month. Now in his 23rd NFL season, Feagles’ average has fallen off, but he remains one of the best in the league at planting punts inside the 20-yard line.

“I couldn’t let him retire before me,” GM Ernie Accorsi said. Feagles has always been one of the best at his position.

The Giants “badly” wanted the veteran back after a fine season. Feagles set the all-time NFL record for total punts and consecutive games played during the 2005 season.

The Giants want him back, but it might be due time he retires.
