Free agent QBs A.J. McCarron, Garrett Gilbert, Kevin Hogan, Mike Glennon, and Kurt Benkert worked out for the 49ers on Tuesday.
McCarron suffered a torn ACL in the 2021 preseason and has had no visits or interest since. This is a rough crew, but that’s what happens when you lose a quarterback in-season. Gilbert has started a game in each of the last two seasons and is probably the most competent option on the list. Glennon started four disastrous games with the Giants last year and has the most recent starting experience.

  • Quarterback
    Packers waived QB Kurt Benkert.
Benkert failed to make the Packers’ final roster last summer and spent most of the 2021 season on their practice squad. He was called up later in the season but only saw action on a pair of kneel-downs. Green Bay may choose to sign him to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

  • Quarterback
Packers signed QB Kurt Benkert, WR Chris Blair, DB Kabion Ento, QB Danny Etling, DB Innis Gaines, LB Ladarius Hamilton, C Michal Menete, K J.J. Molson, G Cole Van Lanen, and LB Ray Wilborn to reserve/future deals.
Benkert took some kneels this year when the Packers defeated the Bears on Sunday Night Football. He’ll head into the offseason as the clear No. 3 quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love.

  • FA Quarterback #6
Packers released Blake Bortles from their practice squad.
The team activated Kurt Beknert from the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list in a corresponding move. Bortles was brought in as an emergency backup to Jordan Love when both Benkert and Aaron Rodgers were on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Bortles will wait at the ready for a similar situation to arise for the remainder of the year.

  • FA Quarterback #6
    Packers released QB Blake Bortles.
Bortles was brought in toward the beginning of the Aaron Rodgers debacle as a familiar face to head coach Matt LaFleur. With Rodgers officially back for the 2021 season, Bortles’ services were no longer needed. A veteran passer with five years of starting experience, the former Jaguar should be able to land a gig as a backup or third-string passer on another team. With a strong arm and spotty accuracy, Bortles has the makings of the next iconic journeyman backup. The Packers also waived quarterback Jake Dolegala, leaving Kurt Benkert and Jordan Love as the remaining backups.

  • Quarterback
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the Packers are bringing in free agent QBs Kurt Benkert and Chad Kelly for tryouts during the team’s rookie minicamp.
Benkert spent the past three seasons on Atlanta’s practice squad while Kelly was most recently waived by the Colts. Green Bay didn’t sign or draft a single quarterback despite its ongoing grievance with Aaron Rodgers, forcing the organization to look elsewhere for help. Both players will receive all the reps they can handle since Jordan Love isn’t eligible to participate in this weekend’s rookie minicamp.

  • Quarterback
    Falcons waived QB Kurt Benkert.
Benkert has had okay moments in preseason games, so he’ll at least find practice squad work and could make a 53-man roster elsewhere. Atlanta will be keeping two quarterbacks on their roster. Benkert was stashed on injured reserve with a toe injury last season.

  • Quarterback
Falcons placed QB Kurt Benkert on injured reserve with a toe injury, ending his season.
Players placed on injured reserve during camp are not eligible for return, so Benkert has played his final 2019 snap for the Falcons. If he’s to get on a practice field this year, it would have to be with another team after being cut loose with an injury settlement. The second-year UDFA out-performed veteran Matt Schaub in the Hall-of-Fame game before going down.
  • Quarterback
Falcons QB Kurt Benkert (toe) will be out “for a while.”
Benkert looked decent in the Hall of Fame Game, but this likely makes Matt Schaub the backup to Matt Ryan. There was a chance that Benkert would take over No. 2 duties with a strong preseason.
  • Quarterback
Falcons signed Virginia QB Kurt Benkert.
Benkert (6’3/218) lost his starting job following a knee injury at East Carolina and spent his final two seasons at UVA, completing just 57.5% of his passes with a 46:20 TD-to-INT ratio on a measly 6.3 yards per attempt. Benkert went an abysmal 8-15 across 23 college starts. Although Benkert’s college production is an obvious red flag, he drew the interest of scouts for his plus size, arm strength, and functional athleticism. On tools alone, Benkert is worth a developmental look.
