49ers signed sixth-round DE Melvin Oliver of LSU to a four-year contract worth $1.695 million.
He received a signing bonus of $102,000. Oliver, who had 20 sacks at LSU, will get a chance to contribute right away to a thin defensive line in San Francisco.

49ers DE Melvin Oliver is expected to miss the upcoming season after tearing the ACL in his right knee during Tuesday’s OTA practice.
Oliver, a rookie starter in 2006, will be replaced in the down-line rotation by free agent signee Sam Rayburn. The LSU alum was slated for a reserve role as a sophomore after San Francisco beefed up the end spot this offseason.

49ers placed DE Melvin Oliver (torn ACL) on the Physically Unable to Perform list and C.J. Brewer (torn ACL) on injured reserve, ending his season.
The Niners will likely welcome Oliver back next season rather than try to work out an injury settlement with him. Brewer could be done in the league.

49ers did not activate DL Melvin Oliver (torn ACL) from the Physically Unable to Perform list, ending his season.
Oliver was never expected to be activated after tearing his ACL during offseason OTAs. A starter in 2006, he’ll be battling for a roster spot in 2008.

    49ers released DE Melvin Oliver.
The 2006 sixth-round pick was a starter as a rookie, but didn’t recover quickly from a torn ACL. He’d fit better in a 4-3 scheme than Mike Nolan’s 3-4.

Free agent DL Melvin Oliver worked out for the Giants on Tuesday.
Oliver could fit as a run-stopping DL/DT in the Giants’ 4-3 scheme.

The Niners expect Isaac Sopoaga to compete with newly-signed Aubrayo Franklin to start at nose tackle this season.
The 6-2/321-pound Sopoaga had 21 tackles and a sack last season. Ronald Fields and Bryant Young are expected to man the ends, meaning 2006 starters Marques Douglas and Melvin Oliver will be rotational subs.
