Texans claimed DT Naquan Jones off waivers from the Chargers.
The 2021 UDFA was waived Monday to make room on the game day roster for the return of Omarion Hampton. Jones will be a rotational piece for the Texans after they lost Tim Settle for the remainder of the season. They waived Jalen Mills to create space for Jones.
  • FA Defensive Lineman #96
    Chargers waived DT Naquan Jones.
Jones appeared in eight games for the Chargers this season, tallying 10 tackles and one TFL while playing in a backup role. The decision to waive Jones likely has to do with rookie RB Omarion Hampton being activated ahead of Monday night’s game against the Eagles. If he clears waivers, Jones will be free to sign with any team.
  • LAC Defensive Tackle #96
Chargers signed DT Naquan Jones, formerly of the Cardinals, to a one-year contract.
Jones has started eight of the 48 career games he’s appeared in. He posted a career-high three sacks last season while also tallying 27 tackles. He’s one of two recently-signed tackles the Chargers will ask to serve in their defensive line rotation this upcoming season, along with D’Shawn Hand.
  • HOU Defensive Tackle #91
Titans signed Michigan State DT Naquan Jones.
Jones (6’3/313) was a highly regarded four-star prospect who was rated the 23rd defensive tackle and 224th overall recruit from the 2016 class. He originally committed to Michigan State as a junior before backing off his pledge when he started getting offers from outside of the Big Ten, only to stick with the Spartans come signing day. Though he played in all 48 games during his stay in East Lansing, Jones only started five of them. Instead, he served as an early-down rotational player who specialized in stonewalling ball carriers from the one tech spot. He is adept at holding the point of attack and shedding but lacks the foot speed (5.45s 40-yard dash) to chase down plays. Jones has a berzerker-like attacking mentality that comes at the expense of his technique at times. His pass-rush ability is sorely lacking, as the heavyweight doesn’t have the athleticism to burn interior defenders with quickness. To that effect, Jones had a ghastly pro day recording a terrible 1.21 RAS that ranks 1150th out of the 1307 defensive tackles who went through the NFL testing process since 1987. It’s hard to envision Jones becoming more than a low-end, early-down run stopper. He could have a Daylon Mack-type impact in the NFL.
