Andy Reid sees Michael Vick as similar to his sons

Eagles coach Andy Reid says that part of the reason he’s been able to work so well with quarterback Michael Vick is that he has two sons who have been in similar situations: Sent to jail and looking for a second chance in life.

In an interview aired on NFL Network’s NFL GameDay Morning, Reid told Steve Mariucci that the experience of helping Britt Reid and Garrett Reid get their lives back together after spending time behind bars has informed the way he coaches Vick, from the day Vick was signed through today.

“When I was going through the situation with my boys, that was basically the same time that Michael was going through his situation,” Reid said. “My second son got out of prison sooner than my first, before Michael was released, so I talked to him.”

Reid says he’s proud of Vick for working with the Humane Society after spending time in prison for dog fighting, and he sees in Vick the same adjustments to life out of prison that his sons are making.

“I know that insecurity when they come out,” Reid said. “Oh, my goodness, I’m back in the big world, now what?”

Reid also said that Vick is his starter for the rest of the year, and Kevin Kolb will not get the starting job back in 2010.

“You make that move, you make it for the season,” Reid said.
