Bears S Coby Bryant had knee surgery, will miss 4-6 months

The timeline for Bears safety Coby Bryant’s return to action has gotten a lot longer.

Head coach Ben Johnson said on Tuesday that Bryant had knee surgery late last week. Bryant is set to miss four to six months, which is far longer than the original timeline of two to three months that accompanied initial news of his injury.

If the recovery moves at the short end of that spectrum, Bryant could be back for the end of the regular season and any playoff games that the Bears might play. It’s not anything that the Bears are going to be able to count on, however, and that’s a big blow to the defense after the Bears moved quickly to sign Bryant off his Super Bowl win with the Seahawks.

The Bears listed the recently signed Xavier Woods behind Bryant on their initial depth chart. Dillon Thieneman was listed as a starter with Bryant and Josh Blackwell, Brandon Hill, Anthony Johnson, and Marlen Sewell are also in reserve roles.
