New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker suffered a major knee injury on Sunday when his knee buckled while he tried to make a cut. Welker went down untouched, but Houston Texans defensive back Bernard Pollard was the closest player and was credited for the tackle.
Pollard, of course, was also the player who hit Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2008, causing Brady’s season-ending knee injury. Pollard told Peter King of SI.com that he had the same feeling on Sunday that he had 16 months earlier.
“I heard Wes yell out, the same way I heard Tom yell out,’' Pollard told King. “It was the same yell. It was terrible. He went down right in front of me. I saw his knee buckle, then I fell on him, and when he went down, I said, ‘Just my luck.’ ''
Pollard’s luck certainly isn’t as bad as Welker’s, but he’ll always be an unpopular man in New England -- even though he’s blameless for the Welker injury, which was just an unfortunate incident that involved an eerie coincidence.
