The Indianapolis Colts are the NFL’s only winless team, and they’ve lost their last three games by a combined 96 points. But coach Jim Caldwell sees some fire in his team.
“You can see that they are going to fight you until the end,” Caldwell said after Sunday’s loss to the Falcons. “They’re just going to keep playing and playing extremely hard, but the thing that we have to do is we have to look at our situation and be honest with it, with everybody. The fact that there are some things that we didn’t do well, that’s why we didn’t win. We kind of look at those situations where we turn it over, and where we aren’t effective in terms of our execution.”
I’m not sure I agree with Caldwell that his players are fighting hard until the end. The Colts have been outscored by a total of 155 points this season, by far the worst point differential in the NFL. Think about that: Even if you take away the Colts’ 62-7 loss to the Saints, they’d still have been outscored by 100 points this year. Those are the numbers of a team whose players have packed it in, not the numbers of a team whose players are fighting hard.
Colts owner Jim Irsay doesn’t seem to think too much of how hard the Colts are playing, posting a frustrated Twitter message Sunday.
“We will never accept this kind of chronic losing,” Irsay wrote. “It’s an unwelcome visitor,that we will not tolerate.”
If Irsay won’t tolerate chronic losing, it’s tough to see how he’s going to tolerate another season of Caldwell.
