David Binn, a long snapper who has played with the San Diego Chargers for longer than any player in franchise history, is out of a job.
The Chargers announced today that they have released Binn after 17 seasons with the team.
“I’ve known David since he came to the Chargers as an unknown long snapper in 1994, our Super Bowl season, and getting to know David has been a privilege,” Chargers President Dean Spanos said in a statement. “David has been the consummate Charger; everything we want in a player and a person. The Chargers are fortunate to have had David. I’m definitely going to miss him around here.”
The 39-year-old Binn is the Chargers’ all-time leader in games played and consecutive games played, he’s been a Pro Bowler and he was the only player left on the roster who was with the Chargers when they went to the Super Bowl after the 1994 season. Among his many other accomplishments, he’s also been romantically linked to Pamela Anderson.
Binn will be replaced by Mike Windt, who stepped in as a rookie long snapper last year after Binn was lost for the season with an injury. There’s no word yet on whether Binn will try to catch on elsewhere, or whether he’s ready to call it a career.
