The Chargers have lost one of their key cornerbacks for the season.
San Diego placed first-round pick Jason Verrett on injured reserve Saturday, the team said.
Verrett (5-9, 178) notched 19 tackles and one pick in six games (four starts) for San Diego. He had been dealing with the shoulder injury since Week Six, then hurt it further in the Week Eight loss to Denver. He had been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup vs. Oakland.
With Verrett out for the season, Brandon Flowers and Shareece Wright are the top cornerbacks for San Diego (5-4), which is a half-game out of the final wild-card spot in the AFC.
In other roster moves Saturday, the Chargers activated outside linebacker Melvin Ingram from injured reserve/designated for return and signed rookie safety Adrian Phillips. The club also released linebacker Cordarro Law.
The Chargers’ first-round pick in 2012, the 25-year-old Ingram has been limited to just six games in the last two seasons because of injury, with a hip ailment limiting him to two games in 2014. However, his return strengthens the Chargers’ hand at outside linebacker. He started both of San Diego’s first two games, recording eight tackles and a sack.
Phillips (5-10, 210) was on the Chargers’ active roster for the Week Nine loss to Miami, recording one assisted tackle. The 22-year-old Phillips is an undrafted free agent from Texas.
