Chiefs bring Dee Ford to Kansas City with 23rd pick

The Chiefs couldn’t hold onto a 38-10 lead against the Colts in the playoffs in January and they decided to pick a player who could help them hold future leads with the 23rd pick of the first round.

Dee Ford had 8.5 sacks for Auburn as a defensive end last season, but he’s on the small side for the position in Kansas City’s defense. That may lead to a move to outside linebacker and, if Ford proves worthy of early playing time, some creative formations that get him on the field with Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in passing situations.

That may be something of a luxury for the Chiefs at this point, but Hali has a good chance of becoming a cap casualty in 2015 as it would save the Chiefs $9 million. Ford can contribute as a situational rusher as a rookie while gaining experience and skill that will make him an every down contributor in the future.

The Chiefs may now look toward wide receiver, where they could use some help if they want to build more 38-10 leads to protect in the future.
