Eric Berry completed one of the most incredible comebacks last year, and the Chiefs weren’t about to let him go.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chiefs used the franchise tag on safety Eric Berry, keeping him out of the free agent market.

The one-year deal will cost the Chiefs $10.806 million next season, unless they can do a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline.

The Chiefs have a number of free agents they want to retain, including defensive tackle Dontari Poe and linebacker Derrick Johnson. But Berry’s contributions last year after returning from lymphoma treatment made it an easy call, for reasons both sentimental and pragmatic.

It would have cost more than $3 million more to tag Johnson, who now has a chance to see what he’s worth to others.
