Chip Kelly is signing Tim Tebow to play in Philadelphia, but Kelly hasn’t always been a big believer in Tebow’s ability to run the Kelly offense.
In 2011, when Kelly was the head coach at Oregon and Tebow was in his second and final year with the Broncos, Kelly made a point of saying that his offense needed a quarterback who is a better passer than Tebow.
“I look for a quarterback who can run and not a running back who can throw. I want a quarterback who can beat you with his arm,” Kelly said, via Grantland. “We are not a Tim Tebow type of quarterback team. I am not going to run my quarterback 20 times on power runs.”
So what changed? Perhaps simply the fact that Tebow is available for a minimum salary and Kelly wants some depth at quarterback on the Eagles’ 90-man roster. It’s not like Tebow is being brought in to start for the Eagles. He’s just being given a chance to show that he can do something in Kelly’s offense, even if Kelly’s offense isn’t suited for a Tebow-type quarterback.
