The Cowboys were awarded veteran defensive end Thaddeus Gibson on waivers from Tennessee on Tuesday, the NFL disclosed in its daily transactions.

Gibson, 26, has had stints with Tennessee, Chicago, Houston, Washington, San Francisco and Pittsburgh. Gibson (6-2, 243) was a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2010.

Dallas also signed undrafted rookie defensive tackle Travis Chappelear, who played collegiately at Northwest Missouri State. The Patriots released Chappelear on August 2. Previously, Chappelear (6-5, 263) had a brief stint with Cincinnati in the spring.

In other moves disclosed by the NFL, the Cowboys waived-injured tackle James Nelson and waived long-snapper P.J. Mangieri on Tuesday. The club also waived linebacker Monte Taylor off injured reserve with an injury settlement.
