A Cowboys contingent that included team owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett oversaw a private workout for Cal quarterback Jared Goff Saturday, Peter King of MMQB.com reported.

King wrote that Jones “reportedly loved what he saw” from Goff in the workout, which took place at the University of California.

That the Cowboys would travel to Cal for another look at Goff 12 days before the draft is interesting for a lot of reasons. Many believe that the Rams traded for the No. 1 pick this week intending to pick Goff, while Jones has said the Cowboys don’t plan to use their pick at No. 4 in the first round on a quarterback.

Jones even praised the Rams’ aggressiveness in making the trade with the Titans.

Jones reserves the right to change his mind and pick any player he wants, of course. And though no one except the Cowboys and Goff know when this workout was scheduled, Goff would have no reason to go through with it if he’d been told by the Rams that he’s their pick. The Rams are understandably saying nothing, at least publicly.

Maybe the trades at the top of the draft are just beginning. Maybe Jones wants to people guessing so much that he was willing to gas up the jet and fly to California just to make people wonder. Maybe Goff just wanted more than a typical Saturday morning workout. Whatever the case, it seems the final pre-draft stretch is going to be full of drama.
