Dan Campbell: I want to help Texas A&M any way I can other than coaching them

Texas A&M fired head coach Jimbo Fisher last weekend and one of the first names to come up in conjunction with the opening was Lions head coach Dan Campbell.

Campbell went to school there, so it wasn’t a great surprise to see a report that the Aggies reached out to Campbell to gauge his interest in the job this week. That report went on to say that Campbell made it clear to the school that he has no interest in leaving his current position and Campbell said the same when asked on Friday if he’s spoken to A&M.

“Maybe,” Campbell said, via Brad Galli of WXYZ. “But that’s all good. Certainly I know some people there and I love my school. That’s my alma mater and I want to do anything I can to help them but coach for them.”

It’s not hard to find examples of coaches who have denied interest in leaving a job before ultimately doing so, but there’s no indication that the Aggies are heavily pursuing Campbell at the moment and the recruiting timeline would make it hard for them to wait to hire a coach until the Lions are finished playing football this season. That suggests Campbell won’t be going anywhere after turning the Lions around over his first three seasons.
