Dan Quinn says Kris Richard would be “terrific” as defensive coordinator

Cornerback Richard Sherman wondered why Seattle defensive backs coach Kris Richard wasn’t getting more consideration for defensive coordinator jobs around the league in early January.

Now with Dan Quinn departing to take over the Atlanta Falcons, Richard could find that promotion coming with the Seahawks.

Quinn, appearing on 710 ESPN Seattle, said he believed Richard would be a “terrific” option for the Seahawks if that is the direction they go to fill Quinn’s spot on the coaching staff.

“My feelings on Kris, he’s probably one of the best developmental coaches I’ve ever been around,” Quin said, via Brady Henderson of MyNorthwest.com. “Think of all the good players he’s had his hand in developing there,” Quinn said before rattling off the names of defensive backs Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Walter Thurmond, Brandon Browner, Jeremy Lane and Tharold Simon.

“Think about what an impact he’s had. He’s such a strong technician and really a committed coach in that way that he’s able to get his point across. So if it ends up going down that way, he’d be terrific at it.”

Sherman had similar thoughts on Richard.

“I would hope our coach would have gotten a little bit more mention,” he said. “He took kind of a ragtag bunch of DBs in 2011 and made them perennial All-Pros and Pro Bowlers, and you don’t hear his name being mentioned as much for D-coordinator jobs and things like that. Which I think it should be. We obviously know what kind of coach he is and what he’s done. But obviously everybody else doesn’t.”

With the Falcons electing to hire Richard Smith as defensive coordinator, it certainly seems like Richard is the strongest candidate to take over the Quinn’s former job in Seattle.
