As you’d imagine, the decision to overturn what was originally ruled a catch by Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant late in Sunday’s loss to the Packers was a popular topic of conversation when Bryant met with the media after the game.
And, as you’d also likely imagine, Bryant thought that he’d done enough to reel in the ball that the initial call on the field should have stood after the replay.
“What am I supposed to do? I’m just reaching for the goal line. I don’t understand,” Bryant said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.
Bryant was then informed of the particulars of the “Calvin Johnson rule,” which was also a ruling by referee Gene Steratore as it happens, and that led him to make a plea to the league that many others have made since the rule governing the “process” of making a catch has gained notoriety.
“I’m begging them: Please, please, please take that rule out,” Bryant said.
The rule has been looked at in the past without being changed because the league has failed to come up with a rule that worked better for situations like this one. Count Bryant among those that would like to see the issue discussed again this offseason.
