Giants Owner Confirms That Burress Was Ignoring The Team

We heard several weeks ago that the Giants had been unable to get in touch with receiver Plaxico Burress after the 2008 season. During a Thursday interview with Chris Russo of Sirius XM Radio’s Mad Dog Unleashed, Giants co-owner John Mara confirmed that Burress wasn’t being responsive. And Mara didn’t like it. "[G.M.] Jerry Reese had attempted to contact him on a number of occasions and was not able to get a hold of him which, to be honest with you, irritated me quite a bit,” Mara said. Mara also explained that the decision to sever ties with Burress resulted from the fact that his pending legal entanglement has not yet been resolved -- and that no resolution was in sight. "[T]he case was postponed again so we felt like that would continue to leave us in limbo,” Mara said. “We were attempting to settle one of the two grievances out there with him, one of which was decided in his favor just the other day, and we were not having much success in those settlement discussions and we just felt like enough was enough and it’s time to just move on.” In the end, the outcome wasn’t unexpected. Mara explained that the relationship likely was heading for a divorce, regardless of the outcome of the legal proceedings. “I was fairly certain, to be honest with you, at the end of the ’08 season that he was probably not coming back to us,” Mara said.
