Irsay hints Colts sat Luck because Rex blitzes too much in preseason

The Colts did not play quarterback Andrew Luck in Saturday’s preseason game in Buffalo, and Bills coach Rex Ryan’s blitzes may be the reason.

Colts owner Jim Irsay took to Twitter before the game and appeared to take a shot at Ryan. Irsay’s tweets are always inscrutable, but he appeared to be suggesting that the Colts were concerned Ryan’s defense would take unnecessary shots at Luck in a glorified scrimmage.

“It’s a long preseason and two home games are coming . . . Look for No. 12 to make his first start then instead of tonight,” Irsay tweeted (with somewhat less legible spelling). “My good friend Rex has never heard of the word preseason.”

Asked about Irsay’s comments after the game, Ryan declined to discuss Irsay directly.

“I don’ t know, take a look at the tape. See how many times we blitzed,” Ryan said. “I can tell you one thing, Chuck Pagano’s a good friend of mine, legitimately good friend of mine. I have way more respect for him than I do others.”

Ryan didn’t say whether Irsay is one of the “others” he has less respect for. We’ll have to read between the lines for that. Just as we always have to when reading Irsay’s tweets.
