Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ view on how the team will handle the quarterback position once Tony Romo is cleared to return to action has evolved a great deal since Romo broke a bone in his back in a preseason game 10 weeks ago.
It moved from Dak Prescott keeping the spot warm for Romo to Jones saying that “when you have the hot hand you have to ride it” before Prescott led the Cowboys to a sixth straight win against the Eagles last Sunday night. During a Tuesday appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones delivered a similar message.
Jones said “we’ve got a lot of chemistry” on offense, which is something they have to keep in mind even with Romo “making a lot of progress.” Jones also said that Romo isn’t going to make a stink because of how much promise the season holds for the team.
“Tony has no issue with doing what’s best for the team -- absolutely no issue doing what’s best for the team,” Jones said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “If you really step back and look at it, it has everything to do with our ability to try to have more success than we’ve had let’s say even in Tony’s career relative to this year and how this thing might end up. When you’ve got it going, we know these things can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for everybody involved. We’ll look at it that way.”
Having a healthy Romo behind Prescott would make it easier for the Cowboys to avoid having that opportunity go up in smoke should Prescott get hurt and that looks more like the likeliest scenario at quarterback in Dallas with every passing week.
