In the latest step that should prove that the NFL is serious about creating opportunities for women, the Lions are adding cheerleaders for the coming season.

Team president Rod Wood announced the move Monday, since owner/matriarch Martha Firestone Ford’s pompons apparently weren’t back from the cleaners.

“The Ford Family is unwavering in their commitment to improving the Detroit Lions fan experience on and off the field,” Wood said in a statement from the team. “After thorough consideration and receiving input from our fans through season ticket member surveys and focus groups, we believe that this is an opportunity to elevate our game day entertainment.”

Auditions for the squad will be held on June 25, with a training camp held in mid-July.

And as long as the Lions remember to pay their cheerleaders, I suppose it counts as some degree of job creation.

And if any of them happen to be moms, the Lions and the NFL would doubtless count it as a win-win.
