The Detroit Lions haven’t won an NFL title since 1957, which doesn’t leave too many fans of that team or players from it available for celebrations of their achievement.
Unfortunately for the Lions, there aren’t too many other teams of recent vintage to celebrate. The team has never advanced to a Super Bowl and have won just one playoff game since 1957. That game came after the 1991 regular season when they beat the Cowboys 38-6 to advance to the NFC title game against the Redskins.
The Lions lost that game, obviously, but they’ll still be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 1991 team during the 2016 season. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the celebration will come during an October 16 game against the Rams. The team had originally hoped to do it the following weekend when the Redskins will be in town, but too many members of the 1991 club had scheduling conflicts.
Per Birkett, the team expects “much of that year’s team” to be on hand. Barry Sanders was the star of that team with Mel Gray, Bennie Blades, Jerry Ball and Chris Spielman also turning in Pro Bowl campaigns.
