Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel had concussion-like symptoms when he came to the team’s facility Wednesday and has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
That means Manziel is likely out for Sunday’s season finale vs. the Steelers. If Manziel can’t play, Austin Davis will be the starting quarterback.
Davis had to start Dec. 6 vs. the Bengals, and that was a disaster. The Bengals won that game, 37-3.
Terrelle Pryor figures as the Browns’ emergency quarterback, though Browns coach Mike Pettine said the team has not decided if it will try to add another quarterback from what’s become a very thin pool of available arms. When Pettine met with the media early Wednesday afternoon, Manziel was still being evaluated and the team did not know if he had a concussion.
Manziel has started the last three games. He was named the team’s starter for the rest of the season in November but then benched for reportedly lying to Pettine about pictures and videos that showed up on social media.
He threw for a career-best 373 yards in a loss to the Steelers in November.
