With fresh focus on the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, there’s one thing in the mainstream news that definitely has no connection to the case: The knife found earlier this year at O.J. Simpson’s former property in Brentwood.
According to the Associated Press, L.A. police have determined that the item found years ago by a construction worker and given to an off-duty police officer is not the murder weapon.
“We have confirmed, we have determined, there is no nexus,” Police Captain Andy Neiman said.
The knife had been given to George Maycott, who was providing security at a nearby film set. Maycott’s lawyer said that the officer had tried to surrender the knife to the LAPD at the time, but that Maycott was told there was no need for it because Simpson had been acquitted.
That version conflicts with the initial accounts of the discovery of the knife; police created the impression that Maycott improperly had concealed the knife for years, with police becoming aware only when Maycott requested information about the file number of the case.
Interest in the Simpson case has grown in recent months, thanks to the FX series based on the trial and an upcoming five-part ESPN documentary.
