Early on Monday, we shared a story about former Ravens running back Jamal Lewis selling a Super Bowl XLVII ring for $50,820.

Lewis had been given the ring as a gift from the team along with other members of the franchise’s Ring of Honor who were not active players when the Ravens beat the 49ers in New Orleans. The Ravens released a statement on Monday afternoon regarding the sale and said that there are no hard feelings from the team regarding Lewis’s decision.

“Jamal Lewis informed us that he was forced to sell the Super Bowl XLVII ring due to financial difficulties. We understand and respect his decision,” the statement reads.

Even if the Ravens were upset about Lewis’s choice, they wouldn’t have much recourse since the ring was Lewis’s to sell, wear or give away. The decision to sell, then, stands as a reminder of how often NFL players can find themselves in rough financial shape once their careers come to an end.
