As the Eagles struggled through a disappointing 2011 season, some Philadelphia fans voiced their displeasure with coach Andy Reid by chanting “Fire Andy.” Reid says he didn’t notice that while he was concentrating on the games, but he still got the message loud and clear.
In an interview with Jim Rome on Rome, Reid said that when a talented team misses the playoffs like the 2011 Eagles did, it’s completely understandable for the coach to feel the heat.
“I didn’t hear it at the moment but I was well aware of it afterwards, and I could understand it,” Reid said. “We were stinking the place up, and we were not doing a good job, so I take full responsibility for that. That’s the way it is. I’m lucky to have an owner who believes in me and trusts in me and allowed me to stay here another year and get this thing rolling and have another opportunity at it.”
So Reid knows he’s on the hot seat, but he said he won’t go into the season thinking about the importance of saving his own job.
“It’s not about Andy,” Reid said. “It’s about the Philadelphia Eagles and the football team. So that would be very selfish of me to think about it that way.”
Still, if the Eagles play in 2012 like they did in 2011, Philly fans will do their best to make Reid think about his job.
