The Lions said farewell to wide receiver Calvin Johnson on Tuesday and they’ll reportedly welcome Marvin Jones to the team on Wednesday.
Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN reports that Jones will sign with the Lions when the new league year begins at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday afternoon. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the deal is expected to be in the neighborhood of $8 million per year.
Jones, No. 39 on PFT’s list of the top free agents, isn’t going to do the same things for the Lions that Johnson did over the years, although that kind of production is hardly something they could have hoped to find on the free agent market. Jones is coming off the best season of his career, however, and set career highs for both catches (65) and receiving yards (816) with the Bengals in 2015.
While Jones is poised to step into Detroit’s lineup alongside Golden Tate, the Bengals may need to find someone to slot in next to A.J. Green. Mohamed Sanu may also be heading elsewhere once free agency opens, which would leave Brandon Tate as the most experienced receiver on the roster after Green.
