Report: Vikings release Javon Walker

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Vikings have released wide receiver Javon Walker.

The move would not have come as a surprise when Walker signed with the Vikes on August 24. But the once left-for-dead receiver was productive in the preseason, catching six balls for 119 yards and two touchdowns in two games, including a 63-yard scoring bomb from rookie quarterback in the exhibition finale.

The Vikings did target Walker for possession receiver help only, and appear to have deemed Greg Camarillo a superior option. Walker’s preseason tape should ensure that he gets another opportunity.

The Vikings’ Week One starting receivers will be split end Bernard Berrian and flanker Percy Harvin. Camarillo will likely beat out Greg Lewis and enter in three-receiver sets.

It’s quite a downgrade from last year’s first-team three-receiver formation of Sidney Rice, Berrian, and Harvin.
