It’s vaguely news when players under contract don’t show up for the start of —say it with me — voluntary workouts.
When players without contracts don’t show up, not so much.
So it was little surprise when Browns safety Tashaun Gipson didn’t show up for the start of workouts in Cleveland today, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Gipson is a restricted free agent who was tendered at the second round level ($2.356 million), though he would have obviously preferred a bigger deal after making the Pro Bowl last year.
Teams have until Friday to give RFAs an offer sheet, with a five-day window for a player’s original team to match.
Staying away is a reasonably clear indicator that he’s not happy about his contract situation, so his attendance before the RFA period ends seems unlikely.
Top safeties have been doing well on the open market, such as the five-year, $47.5 million deal Devin McCourty got this offseason.
And Gipson has certainly made a case to get paid, with 11 interceptions the last two seasons, second only to Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman over that same time frame.
