Normally a kicker missing a kick in a preseason game wouldn’t register much interest. However, when that kicker was a second-round draft pick he’s bound to be more scrutinized that normal.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Roberto Aguayo missed his first career extra-point attempt in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. His kick clanged off the left upright and caromed away.
Aguayo admitted to being nervous over his first professional kick.
“I had a little butterflies going out, but hey, that’s what preseason is for. Go out there, miss my first extra point. Stuff happens,” Aguayo said, via JoeBucsFan.com. “I just went up a little bit on the ball, hooked it a little bit. I bounced back hitting a 38-yarder. I was just waiting for my next call.”
Aguayo never missed an extra-point in college. However, the college PAT is shorter than the NFL’s extra-point try as well.
It’s preseason. The kick won’t count against him when the games actually matter. And a player is allowed to be nervous on his first play, preseason or otherwise.
However, it cannot become a habit. That’s why the Buccaneers drafted him in the first place.
