Spagnuolo struggling to turn things around in St. Louis

It’s hard to criticize Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo for a variety of reasons. He’s inherited an awful roster and a culture of dysfunction in St. Louis. He’s likable.

But after two close losses against mediocre competition to start the year, Spagnuolo is starting to face some gentle criticism at home.

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that Spagnuolo’s teams seem especially poor making adjustments out of halftime. They’ve been outscored 103-28 in the third quarter of games since Spags took over. That’s 28 points in 18 quarters. The Rams have won one game and lost seventeen in that span.

No one expects miracles in St. Louis, but the Rams continue to make mental errors. They don’t look like a well-coached unit. Spagnulo’s side of the ball (defense) has failed to make major progress. The team often makes sloppy mistakes and can’t seem to escape the culture of losing.

“It’s a persistent uphill battle,” left guard Jacob Bell told Jim Thomas. “It’s one of those things where you see looks in guys’ eyes, and you tell ‘em, ‘Hey, snap out of it.’ You see a guy putting his head down, ‘Pick your head up.’”

The Rams get a chance this week to turn things around against Washington. Our PFT picks went against St. Louis, so at least they have that working in their favor.
