STEELERS DON’T KNOW IF ROONEY LETTER IS LEGIT

Responding to an e-mail from Pro Football Talk inquiring about whether a letter from Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney to a Seattle Seahawks fan being listed on eBay is authentic, Steelers communications coordinator Dave Lockett said he wasn’t aware of the letter or certain if it’s authentic or not. Here’s Lockett’s complete response to Mike Florio’s e-mail: “Mike, this is the first I have seen of this letter. I can’t really tell from the picture if it is legitimate. Either way, we are much more concerned with Super Bowl XLIII than Super Bowl XL. I’m sure you understand our position. But I appreciate you trying to verify the authenticity of the letter.” In the Feb. 22, 2006 letter addressed to a Seahawks fan griping about the officiating, Rooney defended the Steelers, writing: “You say the best team didn’t win. The best team did win. The Seahawks are a good football team, they kept it close, but the Steelers were the best.” Rooney also attached a list of 20 reasons why the Steelers won.
