The Lions are number one, on at least one list

If the season ended today, we’d all wonder what happened to the second half of the season.

Also, the Lions would have the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

While it’s admittedly early to look at such things, it’s also worth pointing out the reality of the situation for a number of the league’s also-rans, who can only hope for a fever if they want to dream of the playoffs. And hey, the league’s own website isn’t above pushing the order with half the season left to play, so who are we to ignore it?

At 1-7, the Lions would pick first in the draft at this point, reason enough for coach Jim Caldwell to feel “alive and well.”

They’d be followed by the Chargers, Browns, Titans and Ravens in the top five, with the the Jaguars, Cowboys, 49ers, Texans and Dolphins rounding out the top 10 (draft order ties are broken by strength of schedule).

Of course, the primary question if the Lions retain the top spot is what they want to do with Matt Stafford. While some think it would be crazy for them to part ways with their quarterback, the temptation to blow it up and start over might be more than a new General Manager can resist.
