In some ways, it all happened so fast.
Vince Young threw his jersey in the stands, he got into an argument with his coach Jeff Fisher, and then he walked out on his team and his coach.
“You can’t leave. You can’t do this,’' Young’s friend Michael Griffin reportedly said to Young in the player’s parking lot with media members looking on. (Despite that, Griffin denied the incident.)
Young left, and moments later the media was in the locker room, talking to a stunned Titans team.
“We were told to keep our mouths shut, and that’s what I’m gonna do,” wide receiver Nate Washington said via the Tennessean.
Tight end Bo Scaife, another Texas alum, said, “What happened is between him and Coach. Hopefully they can get some stuff resolved.’
We doubt that is going to happen. As Terry McCormick of TitansInsider.com relays, the issues about Young’s toughness, maturity, and dedication” have been building since the day owner Bud Adams drafted him.
Despite Young’s improved play on the field, he’s been involved in a series of dramas throughout this season related to his preparedness to play and injury questions.
“Young’s maturity has improved, but not nearly as much as the company line coming out of Baptist Sports Park would have had you believe. He can still be super sensitive to criticism, as evidenced by his sarcastic wave for fans to boo him louder on Sunday,” McCormick writes.
“Plus, coaches and teammates are always hesitant to levy even small amounts of public criticism toward him, out of fear of how he might react. A case can certainly be made that Young is more interested in the celebrity and perks that come with being an NFL quarterback than the actual work and the responsibilities that come with the job description.”
Young is due more than $12 million next season. It’s hard to imagine him making that much anywhere, especially in Tennessee.
