As the NFL closes in on announcing punishment over the Saints’ bounties, Saints owner Tom Benson and head coach Sean Payton were apparently at the league office discussing the matter over the weekend.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune passes along a report from WVUE-8, a New Orleans TV station owned by Benson, that the two were in New York City over the weekend, presumably to meet with league officials about punishment for the bounty investigation.

A suspension for Payton and a fine and forfeiture of draft picks for the team are both possibilities. Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis is also likely facing league discipline, and about two dozen players who were members of the Saints’ defense over the last three years could be punished as well.

Gregg Williams, the defensive coordinator who ran the program with the Saints the last three years and is now with the Rams, will almost certainly receive the toughest punishment of all, punishment that is expected to be announced this week.
