Chargers wide receiver Vincent Brown had surgery to repair a broken ankle Sunday, and the team’s hoping he makes it back for the second half of the season.

Brown suffered the injury in the third quarter of the preseason game against Dallas Saturday night.

According to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, the Chargers plan to keep him on the 53-man roster and keep an extra wideout until he’s able to return. A source told Gehlken that there was limited ligament damage, which should hasten his recovery.

“He’s really coming on,” quarterback Philip Rivers said. “He’s going to be a big part of what we do. . . . You hate it for the guy. He’s having a great preseason, a great camp. You hate seeing anyone get injured. . . . Unfortunately, it’s part of [the game]. Guys will have to step up.”

Those guys will include Robert Meachem, Malcom Floyd and Eddie Royal, but Brown missing the first half of the season also opens the door for others as well.
