Godfrey will be attending his sister’s funeral in Georgia.

“He said his family is doing reasonably well considering the circumstances,” said coach Marty Schottenheimer. “Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with him.” The linebacker missed last week’s game because of a neck injury and was questionable before the tragedy.

It’s surprising for a ten-year veteran who has started at least 14 games in all but one of his NFL seasons. He’s a key to the Chargers 3-4 defense.

Veteran Randall Godfrey will make his first start in burgundy and gold.

Godfrey will likely step in as the Redskins’ fourth linebacker with Lemar Marshall released and Marcus Washington (elbow) on the mend. Washington probably isn’t counting on the 34-year-old to emerge as a starter.

He didn’t return. Washington has been banged up throughout the last few years. Randall Godfrey replaced him at strong-side linebacker.

“You need to show some respect for the game. You just don’t do that. I don’t care how bad it is. You’re up 35 points and you’re still throwing deep? That’s no respect,” Godfrey said. Belichick was asked about the subject, and said, “What did you want me to do, kick a field goal? We’re just playing ... It’s not (the offense’s) job to not score. It’s like I tell the offense, what the (bleep) do you think I send you guys out there for? To punt? We have a punt team for that.”
