The Athletic’s James Boyd reports, Colts RB Salvon Ahmed “sustained a season-ending ankle injury after being hip-drop tackled in practice.”
It’s a brutal development for the 26-year-old running back. Ahmed is scheduled to enter free agency next offseason. Hopefully, his rehab goes well and the Colts extend his contract. The team correspondingly signed undrafted free agent rookie RB Nate Noel.

Colts RB Salvon Ahmed (leg/ankle) was carted off the field during Sunday’s practice.
The now-banned hip-drop tackle was the culprit here. Colts safety Trey Washington reportedly deployed the method on a play that resulted in Ahmed screaming and remaining down for several minutes after the play. The veteran running back was given an air cast before being carted off the field on a stretcher, but it sounds like he’ll be at risk of missing most, if not all, of the season once we learn the details of his injury. Head coach Shane Steichen said after practice that it was a mistake by Washington, a rookie out of Mississippi who is trying to make the team as a UDFA, but it’s a stark reminder of why the league pushed to and ultimately banned the tackle after the 2023 season. Ahmed joined the Colts last October and was battling for a spot on the 53-man roster in camp. Ahmed was reportedly taken to the hospital for X-rays. We’ll be sure to provide any updates as they are announced.

Colts RB Trey Sermon has a knee injury.
Sermon banged up the knee in Week 6’s win over the Titans. With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) likely sidelined for another week, Tyler Goodson could be the team’s default lead back this week against the Dolphins. Goodson in Week 6 had 51 yards on eight rushes and functioned as the team’s primary pass-catching back. The Colts signed RB Salvon Ahmed as backfield depth in case Sermon is out against Miami.

Broncos signed RB Salvon Ahmed, formerly of the Dolphins, to their practice squad.
The Broncos added Ahmed after Tyler Badie went down in Sunday’s win over the Jets. Playing four seasons with the Dolphins, Ahmed has 163 carries for 593 yards and five touchdowns, adding 40 catches for 274 yards and a score. He will be depth for the Broncos, who have not found much consistent production from their running back room this season.

    Dolphins released RB Salvon Ahmed.
Ahmed caught on with the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie during the 2020 season. The former Washington Husky rushed 75 times for 319 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season, which included a 23-122-1 performance in Week 15 against the Patriots. Since then, Ahmed has fought to stick around on Miami’s roster. Over the last two seasons, he’s handled 88 carries, taking them for 274 yards and two scores while contributing primarily on special teams. At 25 years old, Ahmed should have no trouble catching on with another team, even if it’s as a camp body over the next few weeks. In addition to Ahmed, the Dolphins also placed wide receiver Willie Snead on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Dolphins have placed LG Isaiah Wynn on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Wynn landed on injured reserve after suffering a Week 7 quadriceps strain and he has evidently yet to fully recover. The Dolphins are smartly playing things cautiously with their shallow offensive line depth. EDGE Cameron Goode was also moved to the PUP list while running back Salvon Ahmed was sent to the active/non-football injury (NFI) list. Players who remain on the active/PUP list come Week 1 must remain sidelined for at least four games.

KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson reports the Dolphins have agreed to terms with RB Salvon Ahmed on a one-year deal.
Ahmed, who’s been with the Dolphins since 2020, will return for another season as backfield depth behind Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane. Ahmed in 2023 had 22 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown in eight games before sustaining a season-ending foot injury in late November.
  • MIA Running Back #26
NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reports the Colts are placing Salvon Ahmed on injured reserve.
Ahmed suffered a foot injury in Week 11 after filling in for De’Von Achane who also left with an injury. The injury dealt to Ahmed was serious enough that the Dolphins chose to put him on IR and they’ll use that spot to bring Robbie Chosen back to the active roster.
  • MIA Running Back #26
Salvon Ahmed rushed three times for six yards in the Dolphins’ Week 11 win over the Raiders, adding three receptions for 25 additional yards and a touchdown.
Ahmed rotated into the Dolphins backfield after De’Von Achane’s knee injury, seeing the bulk of the backfield passing-game usage. He caught a pair of passes in the red zone, taking a checkdown for a touchdown in the second quarter. If Achane is still out, Ahmed will still be in consideration for touches with Raheem Mostert leading the backfield and Jeff Wilson likely active next week. Keep Ahmed on benches until the backfield becomes clearer.
  • MIA Running Back #26
Salvon Ahmed rushed two times for one yard in the Dolphins’ Week 8 win over the Patriots, adding four receptions for 16 yards.
Pro Football Focus charted Ahmed and Jeff Wilson as both playing 19 snaps to Raheem Mostert’s 43. Wilson handled seven touches to Ahmed’s six, finally welcoming himself to the season. With De’Von Achane due back soon from injured reserve, neither Wilson nor Ahmed are making a credible push for RB4/FLEX status.
