Panthers second-year DE Stanley McClover added 15-20 lbs this offseason.
McClover may have left Auburn too early to be drafted high in 2006, but the opportunity will definitely be there with Mike Rucker doubtful for the start of training camp. The athletic prospect has an outside chance to start.
  • CAR Defensive Lineman
Panthers DE Mike Rucker and LT Travelle Wharton, both recovering from ACL surgery, are not practicing at the team’s current round of voluntary workouts.
Both are in line to start, but positive reports about Rucker’s rehab have been few. Wharton is running and should be ready by training camp. If Rucker can’t recover quickly, Charles Johnson and Stanley McClover could battle to start.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
Panthers DE Stanley McClover (groin) returned to full practice Thursday.
McClover will be used in a situational pass rushing role to begin the year. If Mike Rucker goes down, McClover will get first dibs on his starting job.

Panthers DE Stanley McClover (thigh) returned to practice Friday.
Carolina’s third end should be a go for Sunday’s bout with Atlanta.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
Stanley McClover is running with the first-team defense at Panthers camp.
The newly bulked-up defensive end is filling in for Mike Rucker in theory, but appears to have a good chance to open the season as a starter opposite Julius Peppers. McClover is a sleeper to break out as an NFL sophomore.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
The Panthers expect to be without DE Stanley McClover on Sunday.
McClover, Carolina’s third end, has a hurt thigh. Charles Johnson has made slow progress, so Otis Grigsby will likely take McClover’s place this weekend.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
Panthers DE Stanley McClover suffered a groin injury in Thursday’s game.
Even if he isn’t to start over Mike Rucker, McClover had been slated for a big role this season as a third end. He sounds questionable for the opener.
  • FA Defensive Lineman
Panthers signed third-round DE Charles Johnson to a four-year contract.
Johnson, a 20-year-old from Georgia, outplayed his much more highly-touted bookend Quentin Moses in 2006. He may push Stanley McClover for first-team snaps in training camp while Mike Rucker recovers from his torn ACL.
  • CAR Defensive Lineman #90
Panthers DE Julius Peppers missed a second straight day of practice on Wednesday.
Peppers is dealing with a knee sprain, and his status for Saturday nights game against the Cowboys is now in doubt. Mike Rucker also missed practice with an unspecified illness, leaving Stanley McClover and Charles Johnson to practice with the starters on Wednesday.
