The Panthers have restructured defensive lineman Mike Rucker’s contract.
The move opens up over $2 million in cap room for 2005. They are said to still be interested in cornerback Terrence Shaw.

Panthers starting defensive end Mike Rucker may be healthy enough for the start of training camp.
The Panthers will take their physical exams on Friday and even if Rucker does not pass, it looks like he will still be back on the field sooner than expected. Earlier reports said Rucker could miss chunks of practice time while recovering from a 2006 knee injury. Offensive tackle Travelle Wharton, also coming off a knee injury, is expected to be available for the start of camp.

Panthers second-year DE Stanley McClover added 15-20 lbs this offseason.
McClover may have left Auburn too early to be drafted high in 2006, but the opportunity will definitely be there with Mike Rucker doubtful for the start of training camp. The athletic prospect has an outside chance to start.

Panthers DE Mike Rucker and LT Travelle Wharton, both recovering from ACL surgery, are not practicing at the team’s current round of voluntary workouts.
Both are in line to start, but positive reports about Rucker’s rehab have been few. Wharton is running and should be ready by training camp. If Rucker can’t recover quickly, Charles Johnson and Stanley McClover could battle to start.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
Stanley McClover is running with the first-team defense at Panthers camp.
The newly bulked-up defensive end is filling in for Mike Rucker in theory, but appears to have a good chance to open the season as a starter opposite Julius Peppers. McClover is a sleeper to break out as an NFL sophomore.
